ICYMI: Secretary Scott Turner Visits Atlanta to Witness How Opportunity Zones Are Spurring Growth, Expanding Housing Affordability
ATLANTA, Ga. - U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner visited Centennial Yards in Atlanta, an expansive 50-acre mixed use development located within one of the city’s Opportunity Zones. Secretary Turner and stakeholders toured the site, including several new residential and commercial properties under construction, and met with key partners to discuss how the project is transforming downtown Atlanta.
“Since day one, President Trump has made it clear that housing affordability is a top priority of this administration,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner. “Centennial Yards shows how HUD is delivering on that promise – championing innovative, data driven solutions like Opportunity Zones to transform forgotten communities into vibrant neighborhoods bustling with new businesses, housing units, and economic development.”
Established under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), Opportunity Zones incentivize investment and development in traditionally underserved areas. Since the creation of the program, Opportunity Zones have nearly doubled the number of new housing units in respective areas, increased housing supply by more than 300,000 new residential addresses, and raised home values by more than 3.4 percent. Opportunity Zone investments have helped lift more than one million people out of poverty, attracting more than $89 billion in investment and creating more than half a million jobs.
With the passage of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which provided the largest working families tax cut in history, Opportunity Zones were made a permanent part of the U.S. tax code ensuring the continuity of the program for generations to come.
