WASHINGTON - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner announced that HUD declared the Atlantic City Housing Authority (ACHA) in substantial default. This action follows years of mismanagement at ACHA and underscores HUD’s commitment to protect residents and uphold safe and decent housing conditions.

@SecretaryTurner:
“At HUD, we are called to be good stewards of two things: taxpayer dollars and the people we serve. The Atlantic City Housing Authority has neglected that mission. We are taking action to stop negligence and deliver a safe environment for tenants.”

HUD PLANNING TO TAKE OVER ATLANTIC CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY, CITING FAILURES TO CARRY OUT IMPROVEMENT PLAN:

“HUD said ACHA failed to meet other goals in the category of ‘improving physical conditions of dwelling units.’ Several forms detailing possible work that could improve those properties were still just drafts and not finalized, according to the letter.”

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TAKE OVER ATLANTIC CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY:

“After years of problems with heat, mold, pest infestations and other issues, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is taking over the Atlantic City Housing Authority.”

ATLANTIC CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY GETTING FEDERAL TAKEOVER, VAN DREW SAYS:

“‘I want to thank Secretary Turner for giving this situation the attention it deserved,’ Van Drew said. "The failed governance is being addressed, and now it is going to be rebuilt from the ground up. We fought hard, and we got the job done.’”

FEDS SEEM SET TO TAKE OVER ATLANTIC CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY PROPERTIES:

“The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sent the housing authority a letter Monday warning of its intention to take over operations for the housing of around 1,200 people, ‘based on the gravity of ACHA’s situation … it is not appropriate to permit ACHA the opportunity to cure the substantial default.’”
