Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee
TIAC Overview
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) formed its first Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee (TIAC) in November 2022. The purpose of the committee is to allow Tribal leaders a forum to provide input on Departmental policies – especially before policies are adopted and implemented. The TIAC complements Tribal consultation and further ensuring that Tribal leaders have a voice on all policy matters that will have substantial effects on their Tribal communities. Like all Federal agencies, HUD has a trust responsibility and maintains a government-to-government relationship with Tribal Nations. This is a unique legal and political relationship with Tribal governments that continues to ensure that the agency's working relationship with federally recognized Tribal governments fully respects the rights of self-government and self-determination.
The HUD TIAC is comprised of 15 Tribal members (two members from each of the six ONAP Regions and three at-large members). Nominations are solicited through a Federal Register Notice. Accordingly, the Committee represents a diverse cross-section of many different Tribal communities located across the lower 48 and Alaska. There are two Tribal Co-Chairs of the Committee. The HUD TIAC is also comprised of the Secretary and senior HUD leadership.
