This section of the Implementation Guide provides detailed information needed to interface mortgage insurance related applications at a trading partner's installation with an EDI environment capable of transferring X12 transaction sets to HUD. Several tools are provided to aid in understanding and implementing EDI including:
- Transmission Notes;
- Business Scenarios;
- Transaction Set Outline;
- Data Mapping Guide;
- Cross Reference Matrix;
- Adjunct Transaction Sets; and
- EDI Process Description.
Each tool is discussed briefly below.
Transmission Notes -- Transmission notes are provided to inform you of any special concerns you should address regarding a particular transaction set prior to sending data or to ensure you provide the correct data for the transaction set.
Business Scenarios -- A business scenario details a commonly occurring situation as it is presented in an electronic transaction setting.
Transaction Set Outline -- A transaction set outline is provided to aid in your understanding of the format of the transaction set. The outline specifies the format that all trading partners will need to follow to facilitate information exchange with HUD.

The mapping guides are presented in both the X12 Standards Versions 004010 and 004040; and in X12 Standards Versions 003032 through 003042 modified to reflect 8-digit date fields. Refer to Section III for an overview on how to read a Data Mapping Guide.
Cross Reference Matrix -- For some transaction sets, a cross reference matrix is produced to show the relationship between the transaction set data elements and the related HUD application system requirements. The matrix, if used, is included after the mapping guide.

EDI Process Description - A narrative of the EDI process is provided to aid in understanding the EDI process, how it differs from a paper-based or tape-based processes, and any changes in procedures with associated instructions in dealing with these procedures.
