STATEMENT FROM SECRETARY MARCIA L. FUDGE, DEPUTY SECRETARY ADRIANNE TODMAN ON THE 53RD ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY
WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge and Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman released the following statement to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day:
“This weekend, millions of people across the world will unite to commemorate Earth Day and learn more about how we can and must act to save our planet.” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “This year’s Earth Day is particularly exceptional as carbon emissions remain at record high levels causing more extreme weather events, disproportionately impacting the people we serve.
“Over the past 18 months, HUD has been implementing its Climate Action Plan and embedding climate and environmental justice considerations across the Department’s programs and policies. We have advanced increased energy efficiency in HUD-supported housing through updated notices, incentives, and technical assistance. We also unlocked the benefits of community solar for our residents, saving households money while supporting greenhouse gas mitigation. We have awarded grants that incentivize or require green and resilient building approaches and building decarbonization in HUD-supported housing, making this housing safer and cleaner and so much more.”
“As the HUD Secretary and Deputy Secretary, we have a responsibility to protect our environment, our residents, and our economies – today and for future generations,” said Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman. “Working together, we are confident that we can tackle the climate emergency in a way that works for all residents. Together, we can build a safer, more secure, and more sustainable future – and make all our children proud.”
