HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge Releases Statement on the Death of Tyre Nichols

WASHINGTON –Today, Marcia L. Fudge, the 18th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement on the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, TN:

"My thoughts are with Tyre Nichols’ family as they endure the nightmare that too many Black families have had to live and that millions more dread everyday."

"I have grown weary of watching the brutalization of Black people, especially of Black men, at the hands of rogue police officers. Without real change in the law to prevent it from happening, it will continue."

"The most unfortunate truth is that many officers within a police department know who the bad cops are and, if they spoke out, they could prevent acts like this from happening. It is time for police officers and their leadership to stand up. I encourage the strong, honest police officers, who are the vast majority, to have the courage to stand up and call out bad actors. It takes strong leadership, like that of Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis, to put a stop to this deadly cycle."

"Justice demands we take action to end this now."
