Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is Kansas City Southern's (KCS') Charitable Fund.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, KCS is a transportation holding company that has railroad investments in the United States, Mexico, and Panama. Its primary U.S. holding is the Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCSR), a Class I railroad operating 3,226 track miles in a 10-state region, serving the central and south central United States. Among the Class I railroads, KCSR has the shortest route between Kansas City, the second largest rail hub in the country, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Program Areas: KCS' Charitable Fund supports charitable organizations and events benefiting communities and the citizens in its service area. These communities are located in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Targeted Area: Southeast, Midwest, and Southwest.

Eligibility: Contributions can only be made to 501 (c)(3) organizations, as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and are limited by the funds available in the KCS Charitable Fund at any given time.

Requests for funding will not be considered from:

 -   Individuals or organizations established to help specific individuals.
 -   Religious, fraternal, or social organizations.
 -   Organizations whose activities are focused outside KCS' territory.

Award Amount: Award amounts vary.

Application Process: Charitable requests must be in writing and include:

 -   Organizations name and proof of 501 (c)(3) status as part of the Internal Revenue Code.
 -   Mailing address, Internet address, and e-mail.
 -   Name of contact person, title, and phone number.
 -   Officers and members of the governing board.
 -   Purpose of request.
 -   Amount requested.
 -   Any benefits of sponsorship.
