GTECH After School Advantage

Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is the GTECH After School Advantage.

Headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, GTECH is a full-service technology partner catering to all of the systems and support needs of online lottery operators worldwide. Excellence in software design, point-of-sale, instant ticket vending machine and video lottery terminal manufacturing, instant ticket printing and design services, local area network/wide area network communications, sports betting/new media expertise, and central system installations are the hallmarks of GTECH's technical and customer service competencies.

Program Areas: Part of GTECH's Community Involvement Program, the GTECH After School Advantage Program provides nonprofit community agencies with state-of-the-art, Internet-ready computer labs in an effort to interest children in careers in computer fields and provide them with the necessary tools to help them become more competitive in school and today's job market.

GTECH will donate up to $15,000 in state-of-the-art computers, online technology, computer software, and volunteer hours to afterschool programs in inner-city communities. The GTECH After School Advantage Program targets minority and at-risk children ages five to 15. GTECH employees will work with each agency to design and develop a fully operational computer center.

GTECH After School Advantage Programs will be implemented in states where GTECH is located, including Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Targeted Area: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West.

Eligibility: The GTECH After School Advantage Program is implemented in all states where GTECH has offices nationwide. GTECH After School Advantage Program sites must:

 -   Be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community agency.
 -   Be located in a jurisdiction in which GTECH does business.
 -   Have an existing afterschool program in need of a computer lab.
 -   Serve disadvantaged youth ages 5 to 15 of diverse backgrounds.
 -   Have staffing and monetary support systems in place to sustain the lab.

Award Amount: GTECH contributes an average of $15,000 to each site.

Application Process: To determine which agencies are selected for the GTECH After School Advantage Program, a thorough review of proposals submitted by community-based afterschool programs is conducted. Proposals should include:

Organization name, address, city, state, ZIP, telephone, fax, agency executive, and contact person.

Program Criteria
 -   Is the organization a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community agency?
 -   Is the organization located within a jurisdiction in which GTECH does business?
 -   Does the organization have an existing afterschool program in need of a computer lab?
 -   Does the organization support disadvantaged youth of diverse backgrounds? Explain demographic ratios.
 -   Does the organization have staffing and monetary support systems in place to sustain the lab once it is in place?

Organizational Issues
 -   What is the basic purpose of the charitable organization?
 -   What age group does the afterschool program serve?
 -   What days and hours is the afterschool program open?
 -   Does the afterschool center encourage parent participation? If so, explain how parents are involved.
 -   How many students are served by the afterschool program?
 -   How many computers (if any) are currently being utilized by the afterschool program?
 -   What is the current student-to-computer ratio?
 -   Describe the computer equipment currently used in the lab.
 -   Describe computer lab staff and their qualifications.
 -   What is the organization's vision for the lab?
 -   What are some measurable performance indicators? How will the success of the program be evaluated?
 -   What is the frequency and level of detail for reporting to GTECH on the program's progress?
 -   Is there any financial and/or in-kind support available for the program other than GTECH's?

Attachments
 -   Copy of current IRS Exemption letter verifying 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
 -   Current operating budgets and sources of income.
 -   List of names and professional affiliations of directors and trustees.
 -   Latest audited financial report.
 -   Picture of the room(s) where the lab(s) would be installed.
