Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is Scholastic Book Grants.

Program Areas: The Scholastic Book Grants Program is a corporate in-kind giving initiative that provides high-quality reading materials to children in need. The company's goal is to ensure that each of its book donations has a significant impact on fostering literacy and a joy of reading among the most at-risk young people and families, with a particular emphasis on inner-city and rural areas.

Book donations are provided on two levels. The one of most relevance to Neighborhood Networks centers is:

 -   Small-scale (unsolicited) donations of 500-1,000 books are awarded to literacy organizations that operate under sections 170 (c) or 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Unsolicited donations policies and procedures, and a donation application are available online. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

Targeted Area: National.

Eligibility: Scholastic grants requests from literacy organization with 170(c) or 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status. Requests from organizations with quality literacy programs focused on serving the needs of at-risk children or families, particularly those living in inner city or rural areas, are more likely to be granted.

The company does not grant requests from/for the following:

 -   Individuals.
 -   Individual schools.
 -   Individual libraries.
 -   Special events.
 -   Auctions.
 -   Fundraisers.
 -   Capital campaigns.
 -   Scholarships or scholarship funds.
 -   Political, labor, religious, fraternal, or sports groups.

In addition, Scholastic does not donate autographed books or buy advertisement in school or church publications.

Telephone, facsimile, or e-mail requests, as well as incomplete applications or repeat requests (from organizations that have received a donation within the calendar year) will not be considered.

Award Amount: Donations are in books.

Application Process: Nonprofit organizations interested in applying for grants of 500-1,000 books must complete an In-Kind Donation Application and submit request with proof of tax exempt status to:

Patricia Vaughan
Community Affairs Department
Scholastic
557 Broadway
New York, NY 10012

Requests for book donations must indicate intended book use and the grade levels of children to be served. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Due to the overwhelming number of requests that Scholastic receives, the company is unable to grant every worthy request.

Deadlines: Ongoing.
