Weekly Funding Opportunity: Family Dollar

Each week, Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is Family Dollar.

Family Dollar is one of the fastest growing discount retail chains in the United States. Beginning with one store in 1959 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company currently operates more than 6,500 stores in 44 states. These include: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Program Areas: Family Dollar is committed to the communities it serves by supporting the nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the quality of life of its customers and associates. Generally, the purpose of the organization, event, or program must be to provide goods or services for low- and middle-income persons in need, and the organization, event, or program must benefit persons or communities served by Family Dollar stores.

Targeted Area: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West.

Eligibility: To be eligible to receive a contribution from Family Dollar, the requesting organization must be designated a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Family Dollar does not fund:

 -   Ads in programs, yearbooks, or other fundraising vehicles.
 -   Requests that are intended to benefit specific individuals or individual families.
 -   Sports teams or athletic events.
 -   New or renovated facilities or capital campaigns.
 -   Political campaigns, programs, or events.
 -   Student trips or tours.
 -   Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, age, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Award Amount: Award amounts vary.

Application Process: All requests must be submitted in writing on the organization's letterhead by mail, fax, or e-mail at least eight weeks before the date of the event. No telephone inquiries will be considered. Requests must include:

 -   Organization name, mailing address, and telephone number.
 -   Documentation of the organization's 501(c)(3) status.
 -   Description of the event, program, or project, including the area and number of people served.
 -   Contact person's name.
 -   Date of event.

Deadlines: Ongoing. Family Dollar's Corporate Contributions Committee meets monthly to review all requests received during the previous month.
