Weekly Funding Opportunity: Avery Dennison

Each week, Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is Avery Dennison.

Avery Dennison is a global leader in pressure-sensitive technology, self-adhesive base materials, and self-adhesive consumer and office products. The company is best known for its Avery brand office automation and consumer products, Fasson-brand self-adhesive materials, reflective and graphic materials, peel-and-stick postage stamps, industrial labeling solutions, specialty tapes, and performance polymers. The company employs more than 30,000 people at more than 150 manufacturing and distribution facilities in more than 60 countries. In 2007, the company's sales were $6.3 billion, and Avery Dennison ranked number 412 on the 2006 Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. industrial and service companies.

Program Areas: Avery Dennison contributes to charitable, cultural, educational, civic, and social welfare organizations and activities to enhance the communities in California, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio.

The Avery Dennison Corporate Contributions Committee administers the company's Corporate Contributions Program that is applicable to U.S. organizations. The Corporate Contributions Program supports programs and projects that:

 -   Address specific community challenges and needs.
 -   Are action-oriented.
 -   Develop opportunities for enrichment of life in which self-support or broad-based community support is the ultimate goal or objective.

Special consideration is given to organizations located in geographic areas in which the company has facilities and to organizations in which company employees actively participate. Grants are made on an annual basis with no renewals implied.

Targeted Area: Northeast, Midwest, and West.

Eligibility: The company provides grants to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

The company does not support:

 -   Individuals.
 -   Service clubs.
 -   Veteran and fraternal organizations.
 -   Churches or religious groups.
 -   Advertising in charitable publications.
 -   Private foundations.
 -   Beauty or talent contests.
 -   Political organizations, candidates, ballot measures, or other political activities.
 -   Operating funds for hospitals.

Application Process: All applications from organizations requesting financial assistance must be in writing and include:

 -   Statement of the organization's purpose and background.
 -   Description of the project, which should include:
 -   Project goals and method of achieving the goals.
 -   Itemized budget for the project.
 -   Specific amount requested.
 -   Project timetable.
 -   Standards for evaluating the project's effectiveness.
 -   A copy of the Internal Revenue Service determination letter designating the organization as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, meeting the requirements of IRS 501(c)(3), as well as a copy of the IRS ruling stating that the organization is not a private foundation as defined in IRS Section 509(a) of the Code.
 -   List of the board of directors.
 -   A current financial statement, preferably audited.
 -   A list of current contributions with giving levels.

Multiple requests from one organization in a calendar year are discouraged. Rejection of a proposal should not be construed as a negative reaction to a particular organization or project, but rather as a choice on the part of the company to use its limited resources alternatively.

Deadlines: Ongoing. Generally, following receipt of a proposal, final decision can be given within 3 to 6 months, at which time the organization will be sent written notification of its request status.
