Weekly Funding Opportunity: AquilaCares Charitable Contributions

Each week, Neighborhood Networks provides potential funding sources to help centers develop and improve programs and services. Featured this week is AquilaCares Charitable Contributions.

Program Areas: Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Aquila is an electric and natural gas distribution company that serves approximately 900,000 customers in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Aquila's primary area for charitable contributions consideration is youth development. Aquila considers the following criteria as qualifiers for youth development:

 -   Develops core competencies in youth.
 -   Builds on strengths rather than deficiencies.
 -   Demonstrates a need in the community and outlines how the organization will minister to that need.

Targeted Area: Midwest and West.

Eligibility: Aquila does not support:

 -   Organizations that do not have current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
 -   Organizations that practice discrimination by race, creed, color, gender, religion, sexual preference, age, or national origin.
 -   Organizations not located in communities where Aquila has a business interest.
 -   Organizations or events whose primary purpose is to redistribute funds to other charitable establishments.
 -   Appeals for unrestricted funds.
 -   Religious organizations whose primary purpose is to promote sectarian values.
 -   Veterans groups and labor organizations that serve only their membership.
 -   Political or lobbying activities.
 -   Funding for a program or project that lasts longer than five years.

Award Amount: Award amounts vary.

Application Process: Aquila does not use pre-printed application forms or accept contribution requests by telephone. To apply for a charitable contribution, send a brief letter of intent (maximum two pages) that includes:

 -   A brief description of the organization.
 -   A description of the program/capital project to be funded (include specific goals, timelines, and cost details).
 -   The expected result and how it will be measured.
 -   A specific contribution request.
 -   Details about tax credits, if available.
 -   Current IRS documentation of the organization's 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
 -   A description of how Aquila's support will be recognized.

Submit a request to the appropriate external affairs manager. Aquila responds to requests within four to six weeks.
