Virtual events were scheduled daily throughout Neighborhood Networks Week. The list of events can be found below.

 

 

Monday, August 4 - Kickoff Event
10 a.m. (EDT) CVS Caremark, the nation's largest provider of prescriptions, hosted a Webinar to discuss the company's workforce development initiatives, such as CVS' on-the-job training, apprenticeship, job shadowing, and pharmacy technician programs. It provided tips for Neighborhood Networks center staff on how to prepare residents to enter the workforce, and explained how CVS can provide job training and placement to youth and adult residents at Neighborhood Networks centers. The Webinar also highlighted CVS' partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Digital Alliance Consortium and the Philadelphia Neighborhood Networks Consortium.

4 p.m. (EDT) The Networks Week 2008 official kickoff event was a Web cast hosted by Neighborhood Networks Director Delores Pruden. In addition to introducing upcoming national events, Ms. Pruden announced the poster contest winners and shared some Neighborhood Networks workforce development success stories, including an exciting video created by Center Director David Zermeno of Boston's Operation P.E.A.C.E. Community Arts and Technology Center. The video included original job training content developed by a Neighborhood Networks center specifically for Neighborhood Networks centers. Tuesday, August 5 - Do It For You Day
2 p.m. (EDT) The U. S. Department of Labor hosted a Webinar about the Workforce Investment System and One-Stop Career. The explained how center staff can help connect residents with the services available at One-Stop Career Centers. Oscar Elizondo of the Lexington Manor Community Learning Center in Corpus Christi, TX discussed how his center is successfully working with a local One-Stop Career Center.

Wednesday, August 6 - Get Connected Day

3 p.m. (EDT)
Neighborhood Networks national partner Grassroots.org offered Webinars at three different times to provide information about valuable free resources, including Web site hosting, Web site design, domain names, search engine optimization services, and language translation tools.

2 p.m. (EDT) TechSoup hosted a Webinar to provide information about how to maximize computing resources. During a one-hour Webinar, participants learned low-cost strategies for managing public networks. Archived Webinar (including links shared during the webinar)
Thursday, August 7 - Know Your Neighbors Day
Throughout the Day As the official "Know Your Neighbors Day" activity, center directors and residents were invited to participate in Operation Reach Out to Another Resident (ROAR). Operation ROAR paired up Neighborhood Networks center users as electronic pen pals, or key pals.  
Friday, August 8 - Closing Event
3 p.m. (EDT) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hosted a video chat focused on making careers in science and engineering more accessible and appealing to middle and high school young women. Female scientists and engineers from NASA shared their stories and challenges, and answered resident questions in a live chat. View the presentation
