Help Them Believe They Can Achieve: Motivating Residents to Join the Workforce

Description:

When it comes to creating an effective workforce development program, instilling residents with the confidence they need to succeed and encouraging them to achieve their goals is just as important, if not more, as providing residents with the necessary skills to compete in today's job market and helping them overcome logistical obstacles such as transportation and childcare. This session examines the internal obstacles that often deter residents from joining the workforce, including self-esteem issues and negative peer pressure. Attendees will discuss different options for providing positive reinforcement and motivating residents to join the workforce.

Lisa Pote has nearly nine years of experience working with nonprofit organizations in strategic planning, partner identification, program design, and outcome measurement. As director of consulting for the Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM), Ms. Pote lends support to nearly 250 nonprofit organizations in middle Tennessee each year and assists nonprofits in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, South Carolina, and Texas. Prior to joining CNM, Ms. Pote served as the director of community services at Metro's Nashville Career Advancement Center. In this position, Ms. Pote designed and managed a number of programs that helped individuals move off of welfare and connected people with disabilities and the working poor to employment opportunities. Ms. Pote also worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations to help them improve their capacity to deliver workforce development services.
