Building Communities on Mars and Earth

5…4…3…2…1…blast off into Neighborhood Networks Week 2006 with NASA!

On Monday, July 31, at 2 p.m. EDT, Neighborhood Networks center directors, students, consortium leaders, and other stakeholders will join staff members from the National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA) in a live webcast entitled "Building Communities on Mars and Earth" that showcases the unique and exciting national partnership Neighborhood Networks enjoys with NASA.

During the webcast, a panel of Neighborhood Networks representatives, including Neighborhood Networks National Consortium President Thaddeus Miles, will be on hand to discuss how they implemented NASA's Imagine Mars Project at their centers, and how the program is encouraging young residents to pursue their interests in science and technology. NASA also will provide information on how Neighborhood Networks centers can join the Imagine Mars Project, a national arts, sciences, and technology education initiative that leads students to work together with scientists, engineers, artists, and civic leaders to design and share a futuristic Mars community for 100 people.

Viewers will be able to e-mail their questions to panelists and scientists throughout the webcast. These questions will be answered during the webcast, as well as during a live webchat that will follow the webcast. More information, including instructions on how to access this engaging virtual event, can be found on NASA's web site.

Don't miss this opportunity to engage in a dialogue with fellow Neighborhood Networks stakeholders and NASA scientists that is sure to be out of this world!

Save Smart

As a Neighborhood Networks stakeholder, you are constantly trying to find ways to offer residents the programs they need and want-at times that fit into everyone's hectic schedules. Wouldn't it be great if someone came up with a solution that enabled you to offer residents two programs at once? Someone has.

The Adult Literacy Media Alliance (ALMA), a national partner with Neighborhood Networks, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help adults gain basic reading, writing, and math skills by cultivating community networks through innovative, educationally sound, and entertaining television-based teaching materials. ALMA's newly created "Save Smart" multimedia curriculum is designed to strengthen basic adult reading, writing, and math skills-and at the same time, provide tips on saving and investing.

Check out ALMA's latest curriculum on Friday, August 4, at 2 p.m. EDT during a live one-hour webcast with Illiana Delgado, ALMA's national training director. During the webcast, Delgado will provide an overview of the multimedia toolkit and discuss its components, which include four video segments, a teacher's guide, student handouts, and Web lessons. After showing a brief video, Delgado will teach a lesson that corresponds with the video and demonstrates how the materials can be used to teach basic reading and math skills involved in saving and investing. Viewers will then be able to ask Delgado questions during a question-and-answer session. A free copy of the curriculum will also be distributed to each viewer by mail after the webcast.

To participate in the webcast, enter your name, and click "Enter Now." This will automatically download the software required to view the webcast. You should allot 3-5 minutes for this process. (You may need to disable your computer's pop-up blocker in order to download the software. Instructions for disabling pop-up blockers are available on the site.)

Join your Neighborhood Networks colleagues for this virtual event that allows you to simultaneously provide residents with the tools they need for today, while helping them plan for tomorrow.
