HUD
is the mission regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two housing
government sponsored enterprises or GSEs. HUD's responsibilities
include ensuring that the GSEs engage in activities and programs
that are consistent with their charter authorities, including the
public purposes that Congress established for them. In this regard,
HUD reviews business activities and issues determination letters.
HUD also sets, monitors, and enforces affordable housing goals,
which the GSEs are expected to meet or exceed each year. HUD publishes
regulations related to the housing goals and also issues policy
letters on specific issues related to counting mortgages and dwelling
units for credit towards the housing goals.
