Bush Administration Awards $18 Million in Fair Housing Grants To Local Organizations
HUD
has awarded $18.04 million in grants through the Fair Housing Initiatives Program
(FHIP). These grants will fund investigation of housing discrimination complaints
and educate the public and the housing industry on the laws against housing discrimination.
Grants were awarded under one of three initiatives: - Private
Enforcement Initiative grants (PEI) - HUD awarded $13.6 million in enforcement
grants of up to $275,000 to assist 61 private, tax-exempt fair housing enforcement
organizations in the investigation and enforcement of alleged violations of the
Fair Housing Act and substantially equivalent State and local fair housing laws.
About $3.4 million of this $13.6 million was allocated for 13 groups that received
funding for three years, based upon appropriations, that will allow them to implement
strategic plans and develop long-term systemic investigations.
- Education
and Outreach Initiative grants (EOI) - HUD awarded $3.94 million to groups
that inform and educate the public about the rights and obligations under federal,
state, and local fair housing laws. These one-year grants of up to $100,000 were
awarded to 42 groups. Of the total EOI funding, HUD awarded $400,000 to four groups
that focus on educating Asians and Pacific Islanders on their fair housing rights.
HUD awarded another $800,000 to nine groups that educate persons with disabilities,
their service providers, and the general public on the rights of persons with
disabilities and the accessibility portions of the Fair Housing Act. HUD awarded
almost $100,000 to one minority-serving institution that will develop curricula
for students to pursue careers in fair housing.
- Fair Housing
Organizations Initiative grants (FHOI) - HUD awarded $500,000 to one organization
to develop a new fair housing organization that will serve rural and immigrant
populations in underserved areas or where there currently is no existing fair
housing organization.
