On
March 8, 1997, the President called upon the Federal Government,
the Nation's largest employer, to join in answering his call for
businesses, nonprofit organizations, and religious groups to respond
to the challenge of welfare reform by offering jobs to welfare recipients.
The
Welfare to Work program requires Federal agencies to directly hire
individuals off the welfare rolls. While the program does not require
Federal contractors to do likewise, the Federal procurement community
can certainly help with this initiative. To that end, you are urged
to consider hiring current welfare recipients. (Please note that
under certain contracts, Federal acquisition rules permit the Government
to reimburse Federal contractors for costs incurred in training
personnel, if those costs are related to the job for which the individual
is hired. For more information on such costs, contact the contracting
officer for your contract or your nearest HUD contracting
office.)"
We
invite you to share your Welfare to Work success stories with us.
Significant achievements will be brought to the Secretarys
attention for possible recognition. Send your success stories by
email to our Welfare to Work contracting contact Fred
