Urban
Americans usually take water lines, sewer systems, and trash removal
for granted. Rural residents cannot always count on having the same
infrastructure available. Rural households experience problems with
water quantity and availability. Many of rural America's water and
sewer systems do not meet federal standards, and numerous rural
communities lack treatment facilities of any sort.
This part of the Rural Housing and Economic Development Gateway
site will provide funding summaries and case studies for users to
learn more about rural infrastructure funding opportunities and
the experiences of other communities that have improved their infrastructure.
For more detailed information on rural infrastructure issues, visit
the Rural
Community Assistance Program website.

Water and Sewer Facilities in Rural America
Many of rural America's water and sewer systems do not meet federal
standards. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Statistical
Assessment of Rural Water Conditions found that in 1984 two-thirds
of rural water supplies violated EPA drinking water standards.
