For much of the last century, the poor quality and condition of homes was the primary housing concern facing rural areas in the United States. Drastically increasing housing costs and affordability have replaced poor housing conditions as the greatest problem facing low-income rural households today. Despite the fact that housing costs are lower in nonmetro areas than in cities and suburbs, many households find it difficult to meet their basic housing costs. Most cost-burdened households have low incomes, and a disproportionate number are renters. At the same time, housing quality problems persist in rural places.

This part of the Rural Housing and Economic Development Gateway site will provide funding summaries and case studies for users to learn more about rural housing funding opportunities and the experiences of other rural housing developers.
