Rural Alabama Firms Enjoy Renewal Community Tax Savings

Greene-Sumter, Alabama Renewal Community

Members of the TSEC team, Sumpter County ALTrackSide Entertainment Center (TSEC), located in Sumter County, Alabama, is widely known for providing friendly service, excellent food and great catering services.  TSEC opened in York, Alabama, in 2007 and operates York Station, a family-oriented restaurant, and the Oasis, an open courtyard, which serves large families, church groups and youth groups.  In 2007, TSEC received a $435,000 commercial revitalization deduction (CRD) allocation through the federal Renewal Community program to renovate a building with severe structural damage.  CRD allocations allow eligible firms in Renewal Communities to deduct construction and substantial rehabilitation costs over just 10 years instead of 39 years.  The project created five full time positions and six part-time positions.

Employees at the Midway Travel PlazaMidway Travel Plaza is a newly-built project in Greene County, Alabama, that attracts interstate travelers and revitalized an exit off I-20/59.  The project consists of three widely-known franchises that are now happily serving the public: a Chevron Service Station/convenience store; a Subway Restaurant and a 40-room Comfort Inn Hotel.  Midway Travel Plaza operates as RP & RP Enterprises, Inc., and financed the construction partly through a $3.2 million commercial revitalization deduction allocation through HUD’s Renewal Community program.  The construction of the hotel created 15 temporary jobs and the operation of the three businesses created 20 permanent jobs.

Boligee Electric, 215 Boligee StreetBoligee Electric is a retail establishment that sells electrical products and services.  Established in 1989, Boligee Electric employees have years of knowledge and experience and the company provides a satisfaction guarantee for all services provided.  The company’s mission is to provide top products at the best price.  In 2007, Boligee Electric needed to perform some major rehabilitation to its facility so it applied for, and received, a $160,842 commercial revitalization deduction allocation through the HUD Renewal Community program.  The company used the allocation to deduct its rehabilitation costs over just 10 years instead of the normal 39 years.  The building rehabilitation allows the company to continue to serve its loyal customers for years to come.
