Success Story Description

1996 City of Bremerton Community Development Block Grant funds were used to renovate the 616 Sixth Street building to house a 12 exam room primary care medical clinic. The need for these important health services provided by the clinic grew very rapidly. The clinic went from serving 4,000 unduplicated persons in 1997 to serving close to 30,000 unduplicated visitors in 2003. Overall the clinic reported serving close to 100,000 visitors total in 2003!

To meet the need for health services in other areas, Kitsap Community Health Services decided to branch out and become Peninsula Community Health Services (PCHS). Today PCHS continues to try and meet the health needs of the community by providing the following services to low and moderate income persons at five clinics in Washington State (Bremerton, Aberdeen, Copalis Beach, Port Orchard, and Poulsbo):

• Primary Medical Care Services: 24-Hour On-call Care, Routine Physicals, Immunizations and Flu Shots, Minor Surgery, Newborn and Well Child Care, Women's Health Care, Family Planning, and Pregnancy Testing, Chronic Disease Care, Cancer Screening, On-Site Pharmacy Dispensary, Mental Health Counseling, Health Education and Information, Referrals for Specialty Care.
  
  
• Dental Services: Preventive Care, Oral Examinations, Oral Hygiene, X-rays, Emergency Care, Dental Education and Information, Referrals for Specialty Care.

Patients are charged for services according to a sliding fee scale based on their income. They also accept DSHS/medical coupons, Healthy Options, Basic Health, Medicare, TriCare and other private insurance reimbursements. PCHS is also supported by a variety of funding sources including federal, state, local and private grants, local United Ways and community and individual contributions.
