Success Story Description

One of Killeen's oldest neighborhoods received a welcome boost with the dedication of a renovated park. What was once just an old softball field, now is a beautiful park that includes a large playscape, swing sets, a basketball court, a covered pavilion, picnic areas, landscaping and irrigation system.

City officials held a dedication ceremony on April 13, 2004 and Mayor Maureen Jouett declared this week as Community Development Week. The city of Killeen used a $94,000 CDBG grant to completely renovate this park land into a neighborhood park for one of the oldest neighborhoods in Killeen. All work was completed by Killeen parks and recreation staff thus allowing for more funding to be used for the purchase of equipment and materials. The city of Killeen used staff labor as in-kind resources to further stretch the budget to complete this project.

819 people reside in the neighborhood of Marlboro Heights and 464 of those are within the low to moderate income limits established by HUD. This neighborhood also serves the community with a Head Start center, a senior citizen center and has an active neighborhood watch program.
