Energy Efficiency Financing and Rebates

Several resources available provide information on energy efficiency financing and rebates. There are two main programs for consumers including Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM) and rebates through state and local programs.

The Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM) is a government-sponsored program that allows you to roll the costs of effective energy efficient improvements into your home loan. This opportunity is available when purchasing or refinancing your home. The EEM can be obtained with little or no out-of-pocket money, and in almost all cases, no additional qualifying is required.

HUD, the Veteran's Administration (VA), Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac offer the Energy Efficient Mortgage program. DOE and several partners have prepared an Energy Efficient Mortgage Home Owner Guide. This guide introduces how EEMs work.

Energy Efficiency Rebates. In addition to EEMs, consumers are often able to receive rebates on energy efficiency products, technologies, or practices. Several states offer programs, such as the California Energy Commission. The California Energy Commission provides a searchable website for energy rebates for consumers.

Rebates from ENERGY STAR Partners may also be available. To encourage customers to buy energy efficient products, ENERGY STAR partners occasionally sponsor rebates on qualified products. The ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder provides consumers a searchable database to find such rebates where they exist, based on information that partners submit to ENERGY STAR.
