Summary of Challenges and Issues

Everyone is concerned about high-energy bills. However, poorly installed energy efficiency measures can lead to problems that are very expensive to resolve. An understanding of these common problems can help to avoid costly repairs, major comfort, and health concerns for homeowners in the future.

Tight envelope construction is important in energy efficient homes, but it can lead to inadequate ventilation and backdrafting problems. Homes must be designed to have adequate ventilation, combustion safety, and energy efficient features.

Also, when carrying out energy efficiency methods, careful thought must be given to the following:

  • the proper installation of attic insulation to prevent ice damming;
  • storm water drainage to prevent moisture in basements; and
  • the use of low-emission paints and glues in building materials to minimize indoor air problems.
