Nelson R. Bregón is currently the General Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) responsible for administering grant programs that help communities plan and finance their growth and development, increase their capacity to govern, and provide shelter and service for homeless people. Mr. Bregón assists with the management of approximately 800 employees in over 40 field offices nationwide.
Mr. Bregón also served as the Senior Vice-President for the Office of Community-Based Securities at the Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae). Before going to Ginnie Mae, Mr. Bregón was Director of the Office of Economic Development and Empowerment Service in CPD where he managed the Section 108 Loan Guarantee Program, the Economic Development Initiative (EDI), the Brownsfields Economic Development Initiative (BEDI), the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF) Pilot, the Urban Development Action Grant (UDAG) program, the Youthbuild program, and Economic Development Initiative Special Projects.
Nelson R. Bregón began his career with HUD in 1980, in the Chicago Field Office. In 1984, he transferred to HUD Headquarters as Deputy Senior Director in the Office of Urban Development Action Grants (UDAG). In 1988, he left HUD to become the Washington, D.C. Director of the National Development Council (NDC).
Mr. Bregón received a Bachelors of Arts from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico in 1976 and a Master of Arts from Kent State University in Ohio in 1978. He is a Certified Economic Development Finance Professional and a Certified Housing Development Finance Professional. He is fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
