HUD stands ready to help
Akron Beacon Journal (Ohio) Monday, March 19, 2007
Thank you for your excellent article headlined "Cincinnati landlord accused of harassing female tenants" on Feb. 26.
It's unfortunate that in 2007 people are still being discriminated against when it comes to securing and maintaining housing.
In my role as the Department of Housing and Urban Development's assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity, I am responsible for enforcing the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of dwellings based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status and disability.
Compelling stories like these assist our education and outreach efforts by informing the public about their fair-housing rights.
Regrettably, we have recently seen similar cases where the alleged victims were low-income, single women, who had limited opportunities to seek other housing. It is important to let people know that if they encounter this kind of housing discrimination, HUD is ready to help them file a complaint.
Victims can come to HUD for assistance by calling our toll-free number: (800) 669-9777 or by visiting our Website, www.hud.gov/fairhousing.
Thanks again for letting readers know about such an important issue.
