Revitalizing a Neighborhood - Mathew Campfield Park

In 1999, the City of Casper used a portion of their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to demolish the old city garage building located in the northern part of town. The City of Casper wanted to use the land to build a park for the area residents. The neighborhood residents were asked to vote on a name for the park, and Dr. Mathew Campfield was chosen from among several candidates. Dr. Campfield was the first African-American coroner in the county.

This year, Phase II of the project was completed using a combination of CDBG funds and Optional One Cent Tax from the City. The completed park has basketball courts, picnic areas, playground equipment, and a place to throw horseshoes. Parents and children now enjoy more quality time and family-oriented activities in their own backyard.
