Nooksack tribal land sits in a valley nestled below the rugged Cascade Mountains - just 16 miles from Mount Baker, an ice-clad volcano. This is an area with cold winter weather, where most of the year the area is damp and moss-laden. It may not sound too hospitable, but Katherine Romero and her family have found a home here.

Katherine, her husband Niceto Canete, and their two children, Doinisio Romero and Sophia Walker, are proud owners of a three bedroom single family home in the Nooksack Homes II neighborhood. The development was funded by Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Funds through the Washington State Housing and Finance Commission, as well as Indian Housing Block Grants and Indian Community Development Block Grants from HUD.

Ms. Romero says, "Nooksack Housing helped me achieve my dream of becoming a homebuyer, which enabled me to continue my education and graduate from Western Washington University with a BA."
