In years past, Ave Maria, Inc. has sold “one or two” plastic statues of St. Joseph each year, the patron saint, said Carol Hazard in the Richmond Times Dispatch , of “household needs.” But in a tough real estate market, she noted, “hundreds of people in the Richmond area are counting on” the statues to “help them sell their houses.” The store’s now selling “more than 500” a month. “We can’t keep them in stock,” explained its owner: “It’s really more of a fun thing,” added real estate agent Craig Via, “but it does give people a sense of security and confidence.”
