The YouthBuild program to help at-risk young people complete high school while acquiring construction skills was one of HUD’s smaller, but most popular competitive grants. Just ask Petersburg Urban Ministries, the Bristol and Danville housing authorities, the Tidewater Builders Association, the Lonesome Pine Office of Youth or any other Virginia organizations that won a HUD Youthbuild grants. Last year, HUD transferred the program to the U.S. Department of Labor which is now accepting applications until July 3rd from nonprofits, workforce investment boards and others for 100 YouthBuild grants of up to $1.1 million. The Piedmont Housing Alliance and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville have teamed up to bring you GreenMatters, a two-year series of free, 90-minute workshops to tell you everything you need to know about ‘going green” in designing new homes or renovating old ones.
