The Inventor Center will serve the 284-unit apartment complex

Earvin Johnson, Jr. recently joined the Houston Multifamily Program Center to work a little "magic" at the Cleme Manor Apartments.

The Magic Johnson Foundation, the nonprofit founded by the former basketball star, partnered with Hewlett Packard, Corel, Bank One, DHL and Microsoft to dedicate the Magic Johnson and Hewlett Packard Inventor Center at the HUD-sponsored Neighborhood Networks Center.

The Houston Multifamily Program Center established the Neighborhood Networks Community Learning Center in the 284-unit Cleme Manor complex in 1998, but the new Inventor Center provides upgraded, state-of-the-art equipment to improve educational and computer literacy opportunities for the residents. Mr. Johnson spoke at the dedication, directing his remarks to 40 children of Cleme Manor residents attending the event. He told them they were the reason for ceremony. "This is not a handout for you, but a hand up. What you are being given is an opportunity for you and even for your children."

Frederick Tombar, HUD Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multifamily Housing, presented a plaque to Mr. Johnson on behalf of HUD and its Neighborhood Networks Initiative. Mr. Tombar stated, "Through the generosity of the Magic Johnson Foundation, Hewlett Packard and our other partners here today, the people who live in Cleme Manor are going to have better lives. The new equipment and software in the Inventor Center will be invaluable in educating residents in preparing them for jobs."

The HUD-subsidized apartment complex near downtown Houston is owned by Cleme Manor Charitable Trust, a nonprofit corporation created by the Church of the Living God of Dallas, Texas.
