Three
years ago, the Vet Center in Sioux Falls was concerned about homeless
veterans. The veterans' stand down, now an annual event, provides
a variety of services and resources for veterans. This year, Sioux
Falls Mayor Dave Munson opened the day and a half event with a mayoral
proclamation and an expression of gratitude for the sacrifices of
our veterans.
The
City of Sioux Falls furnished a local park and Air Force, Navy and
Army Reserve, and National Guard units set up tents. Approximately
150 veterans attended this year's stand down many staying all day
to enjoy the food and fellowship with other veterans. The Veterans
Administration Hospital and a local dentist provided medical and
dental screening. Volunteer hair professionals provided free haircuts.
Free shoes, clothing and blankets from a local thrift store were
distributed to those in need.
The
South Dakota HUD Field Office has participated in this event for
the last two years. This year, HUD staff shared information about
housing subsidy programs, a list of subsidized housing in the community
and homebuyer education materials. Information about agencies that
receive direct or indirect funding from HUD, such as, homeless shelters,
drop in shelters, job placement programs, consumer credit counseling
agencies, and legal services was provided to interested veterans.
