AWARDS $80,155 NATIVE AMERICAN HOUSING BLOCK GRANT TO MODOC TRIBE
OKLAHOMA
CITY - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded
$80,155 to the Housing Authority of the Modoc Tribe as a block grant
to provide a wide range of housing services for Native Americans.
This block grant approach to housing for Native Americans was enabled
by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination
Act (NAHASDA) of 1996. This legislation considered the unique housing
needs of Native Americans, and addressed those problems by deregulating
the tribes, and combining all HUD funds for Native Americans into
one needs-based block grant. The Tribes are empowered with the responsibility
of determining how those funds should be used to address needs specific
to their own communities.
The
award to the Housing Authority of the Modoc Tribe was based on a
housing plan submitted by the Tribe and approved by HUD. The funds
will be used to continue to maintain and administer 22 rental homes
by conducting annual inspections and performing needed maintenance.
The Housing Authority will also continue development of infrastructure
for future homeownership units. The Native American Housing Block
Grant program is administered by HUD's Southern Plains Office of
Native American Programs for Tribes located in the states of Oklahoma,
Texas, Louisiana, Missouri and Kansas.
