On January 14th, 2003, representatives of HUD's Regional Director for NY and NJ, Marisel Morales; Jerilyn Perine, the Commissioner of NYC's Office of Housing Preservation and Development; and representatives from Abraham Plaza Apartments, located on Crotona Avenue in the Bronx, held a ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of this very successful multi-program source special needs/affordable housing development.

This six-story newly constructed building was developed as a Single Room Occupancy Program (SRO) building of fifty- three studio units that will serve as permanent housing for individuals who are homeless or those with a history of drug dependency. Thirty-two of the apartments have been reserved for homeless individuals and will have Section 8 rental subsidies available. Twenty-one units in the building have been reserved for low-income individuals. The building also contains amenities such as a community room, library/learning center, tenant lounges on each individual floor, a laundry room and an outdoor garden.

Of the total project that cost nearly $6.6 million, over $4.4 million was provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through its Home Investment Partnerships Program (HOME). Services for the tenants will also be underwritten with funds from HUD's Supportive Housing Program and through a contract from the New York City's Department of Homeless Services. These on-site supportive services offered to the building's tenant population will be enhanced by a grant from the Abraham Foundation.
