On October 10, 2002, over 70 people joined HUD Assistant Secretary of Community Planning and Development, Roy Bernardi, at a HUD sponsored workshop in Rochester New York on faith-based housing and economic development. Workshop attendees learned about financial and technical resources available to the faith community, discussed model faith-based housing and economic development initiatives, and were informed by Assistant Secretary Bernardi of HUD's commitment to removing program and cultural barriers within the organization that impede full participation of the faith community in HUD sponsored programs.

Workshop speakers included City of Rochester Mayor William Johnson, Pastor John Simmons of New Dimensions Development, Steve Cooper of Metroplex Development, Vanessa Williams and Bill Loewenstein of Community Initiatives Development Corporation, John Adams of Wells Fargo Bank and, Michele Bernier of the HUD Buffalo Office.
