Representing faith-based and community organizations, state/local government and nonprofit agencies, 70 people participated in a free grant writing workshop at the University of Southern Maine on August 27, 2009. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, attendees learned how to compete successfully for federal funds.

Lead by trainer Diana Huot of HUD's Bangor Field Office, the 1-day "Art and Science of Grant Writing" workshop included capacity building, proposal writing techniques, working with local governments, accessing federal funds, common factors for award, searching for grants and developing partnerships. Other presenters included Dr. Lelia DeAndrade of the Maine Community Foundation and Amy Pulaski of Portland's Community Development Block Grant Program Office.

Upon completion of the course, all participants received a certificate of graduation.
