Thanks to a pilot program of Efficiency Maine to promote the use of new LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights, Auburn, Bangor, Biddeford, Lewiston, Portland, Alfred, Augusta, Brunswick, Fort Kent, Houlton, and Waterville will be lit up for the holidays this year - without breaking their budgets.

The communities each received 180 strings of new tree lights, which will lower electricity costs by 90 percent. A typical string of 20 LED lights uses less energy than just one incandescent bulb, making holiday lighting economical without having to give up the festivity.

By lowering the amount of electricity used on the tree lights, the communities will be saving over $10,000 combined, and will be reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 115,745 pounds. Available in white or colors, LED lights offer greater safety because they don’t heat up, thereby eliminating the fire danger associated with holiday lighting. LEDs have an extraordinarily long life, too, lasting up to 134 years or more with less chance of breakage.
