Making Green Cents: Building Sustainable, Cost Effective + Affordable Housing
Sustainable building design can contribute to long-term affordability. Understanding the costs, trade offs, and design considerations in using sustainable building materials and methods is the first step in improving the way we design and build affordable housing in the public and private sector.

The purpose of the conference is to introduce strategies for designing affordable, efficient, cost effective, and sustainable multifamily housing to developers, architects and contractors. This conference will directly address how the construction of efficient building envelopes, structures, and systems can promote sustainability, contribute to affordability, minimize construction time, and promote long-term energy savings, thus expanding the definition of affordable beyond the first costs of construction to include the life cycle cost of the facility.

Bring your affordable housing projects and ideas and learn from a team of professionals what the real green options, trade offs, costs and design considerations are. Register here.
April 18-22 & September 26-30 Orientation to Environmental Assessment
Environmental responsibilities under NEPA and other authorities have been delegated to local governments for many HUD programs, such as Community Development Block Grant, HOME, subsidized and public housing (see 24 CFR 58).  Whenever federal money is spent, the Responsible Entity must complete an Environmental review. This course teaches participants how to correctly conduct an environmental review in accordance with federal law, briefs them on more recent and relevant issues in the environmental field, & raises the awareness and commitment to environmental issues. Agenda.
April 4-8 & September 26-30 Energy Performance Contracting for PHA’s
Energy Performance Contacting is one of the few vehicles where Public Housing Agencies can generate revenue for their operations.  And that is just a side benefit to lowering energy costs and making the dwelling units more comfortable.  This course uses role-playing and a case study approach to give participants the tools to implement EPC in their own PHA. Agenda.
June 20-24 Brownfield Redevelopment: Nuts & Bolts for Local Gov’t
Many urban centers have been left with vacant contaminated land that hinders redevelopment and restoration of a healthy local economy and tax base.  Participants learn how many communities have overcome obstacles and stimulated successful redevelopment by working in teams to develop a Brownfield redevelopment plan. Agenda.
September 13-14
Quad Cities-Illinois & Iowa
Midwest Summit on Sustainable Development of Brownfields
This hands-on design charrette will explore the opportunities to redevelop Brownfields in a manner that will enhance the balance of their impacts on the environment. The group will explore Green Building approaches, Naturalistic storm water management, transit-oriented and walk able communities, New Urbanism, and efficient, green use of energy and materials. Key instructors (not yet confirmed) include Chicago Architect Doug Farr, the lead designer of the LEED Platinum-rated Chicago Center for Green Technology, and Jim Patchett of Conservation Design Forum, a key proponent of native landscaping and naturalistic storm water management approaches. Also included are presenters that represent local governments and consulting firms that have successfully implemented sustainable Brownfield redevelopment.

Sustainable Development of Affordable and Public Housing
Learn how to incorporate sustainability into the design of affordable housing. Topics include storm water management, energy efficiency, green materials, and transportation. The pace of resource use must be brought into balance if we are to leave a livable environment to our children’s children. New paradigms in LEED, Smart Growth, Conservation Design and others guide us towards this balance. This course will consist of three parts: participant presentations of their sustainable projects, experts from the Chicago area, and interactive exercises.
