When the Norwalk Community Health Center (NCHC) recognized that many clients needed help in understanding their medication labels and instructions, they approached the City of Norwalk, CT to seek funding to address the need.

With $28,700 in funds from the Community Development Block Grant program, NCHC purchased an interactive curriculum for use in both the waiting area and classroom settings to assist clients. The interactive program not only assists clients in understanding their medications, but it also helps them understand personal financial documents such as banking materials.

NCHC strongly believes that this literacy development is essential so that clients can make more informed decisions regarding their health and personal finances. With the investment of CDBG funds, the NCHC has been able to assist over 100 individuals to date.

The program has been so successful that it was recognized by the CT Community Development Association during this year’s celebration of Community Development week in April. Visit HUD’s website to learn more about the Community Development Block Grant program.
