The Hartford Field Office conducted a free grant writing training session for faith-based and community organizations on August 4-5, 2004 at Gateway Community College in New Haven. The session was part of a second round of training held across the country. Over 8,000 persons received training during the first round.

Attendance totaled over 66 persons with representatives from religious and community organizations, local and state government, private individuals and housing authorities. Organizational experience ranged from emerging to advanced.

Training included Organizational Development, Legal Do's & Don'ts, Five Factors for
Awards, The Art & Science of Grant Writing, and hands-on group exercises to implement the concepts learned. Training was provided to help level the playing field so that faith-based and community groups have a better chance of obtaining federal funds to help carry out their crucial missions.

Attendees provided high ratings of the session. As one participant commented, "The information I received and the interaction I experienced was invaluable. I intend to share what I have learned with many others in need of an avenue to enhance effective human services. Thanks HUD!"
