Grant Writing Training - Helping Those Who Help Others

HUD's Hartford, CT Field Office recently conducted a two-day free grant writing workshop to teach participants how to secure grant funding. Over 110 persons attended the workshop representing faith-based and community organizations, state/local government and secular nonprofit agencies and independent grant writers.

While the focus was on how to apply for HUD grants, the principles taught are applicable to applying for any grant. There was something of value for everyone, whether they were professional grant writers or just beginning and trying to decide if they should become a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit. The session included organizational development, legal do's and don'ts, five factors for awards and the art & science of grant writing.

Representatives from the city of Bridgeport assisted with a presentation on Community Planning and Development entitlement programs and capacity building grants for the provision of services to the homeless.

Anna Maria Farias, Director of HUD's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI), thanked the participants for their work and gave an overview of what the future may hold for the OFBCI. She also provided a moving presentation with pictures she had taken on the effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
