The Pima County Homeownership Fair: A Bright Spot

The Pima County Homeownership Fair provided an excellent resource for curious and cautious homebuyers. It was a bright spot amidst troublesome housing news about subprime mortgages and record breaking foreclosures.

The Homeownership Fair included over 35 informative exhibits of experienced lenders, builders, housing counselors, and social service providers. In addition, insurance agents, exterminators and appraisers provided a wide variety of technical assistance. Generous sponsors, including the Tucson Association of Realtors, Habitat for Humanity Tucson, and the Manufactured Housing Association, financed the wide-reaching, multi-cultural, bi-lingual advertising campaign. It was held at the convenient downtown campus of Pima Community College in Pima, Arizona. HUD Single Family Outreach Marketing Funds helped provide radio and newspaper advertisements promoting the Fair as well.

The Homeownership Fair was a great learning experience for the public, as well as for the dedicated members of the Homeownership Fair Committee. Exhibitors and sponsors networked and exchanged information in an effort to better assist the homebuyers and homeowners that they serve. The Fair provided potential homebuyers and homeowners invaluable information to assist them in attaining and maintaining their dream of homeownership.

A press conference kicked off the event with speeches by Supervisor Chair Richard Elías, Mayor Bob Walkup, Supervisor Ann Day, and South Tucson City Manager Enrique Serna, emphasizing that the foreclosure issue must be addressed, and that resources for homeowners be made available. Supervisor Elias pledged the County's continued commitment to homeownership and home preservation to ensure that the county residents would have the opportunity to build wealth and stability for their families.
