A few of the many contributors of foods and household goods gather to celebrate the generous donations made from those at the Birmingham HUD Office. |

More than three-quarters of a million Alabama residents are struggling to survive. Many do not have the basic needs of daily living, including food. When the Birmingham HUD Employees Association, which consists of the entire Birmingham HUD staff, heard that local food banks were critically low on stocks of foods and goods, they answered the call to community service and organized a food drive. On May 18, 2009, in less than two weeks from the date the drive began, HUD delivered 300 pounds of foods and household goods to the United Way Community Food Bank, Inc. (UWCFB) in Birmingham, Alabama. UWCFB is a member of Feeding America ® (formerly known as America's Second Harvest ®), a nationwide network of food banks, which solicits food in vast amounts and divides these goods among more than 200 food banks in the United States.
A food drive is a concentrated effort to collect non-perishable canned goods and household items that usually coincides with the holidays. But, not this food drive - people are hungry 365 days a year and the Birmingham HUD employees wanted to act now, at a time when food is needed and supplies are running low.
The food and household goods donated by the Birmingham HUD employees will be distributed to community-based not-for-profit feeding agencies. These agencies include senior service centers, community kitchens, day care centers, food pantries, shelters for women and children, and more. Each agency is a not-for-profit registered charity.
