In December of 2002, the Housing Assistance Council awarded Madeline
Miller, Executive Director of Wil-Low Nonprofit Housing,
the Skip Jason Community Service Award. The Washington ceremony
announced the recipients of the 2002 National Rural Housing Awards.
Wil-Low Nonprofit Housing is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency
that has worked in Wilcox and Lowndes County, two of the poorest
counties in Alabama's Black Belt, since 1975. Under Miller's leadership,
Wil-Low Nonprofit has constructed more than 310 homes, rehabilitated
286 homes, and provided housing counseling to 2,500 families. The
organization builds apartment complexes as well as single family
dwellings. It conducts an aggressive outreach campaign to extend
housing opportunities for the Black Belt's growing Hispanic population.
To contact the Wil-Low, write to P.O. Box 383, Hayneville, AL,
